Later in the 19th century it became part of the independent princely state of Hyderabad. In 1905 it was merged with surrounding areas and renamed Latur tehsil, and became part of Osmanabad district. Before 1948, Latur was a part of Hyderabad state under Nizam. The chief of Nizam’s Razakar army Qasim Rizwi was from Latur. After independence and the merger of Hyderabad with the Indian Union, Osmanabad became part of Bombay Province. In 1960, with the creation of Maharashtra, it became one of its districts. On August 15, 1982, a separate Latur district was carved out of Osmanabad district.

Latur is situated on south central border of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The King Amoghavarsha of Avinash developed the Latur city, originally the native place of the Rashtrakutas. The Rashtrakutas who succeeded the Chalukyas of Badami in 753 A.D called themselves the residents of Lattalut.

It is now an important education center and is known form its Latur Patter. District has population of 5 lacs. The City got the status of mahanagarpalika in 2012. Hon. Vilasrao Deshlmukh was the leader for development of the city who was the chief minister of Maharashtra for two times and Minister Central Cabinet twice.  The has three medical college (One Ayurdyic, One Dental college, one Engineering & two polytechnic besides many colleges providing Arts, Sciences & commerce education.  Its fast developing industrial city having three sugarcane industries.  The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments including the Kharosa Caves, as well as Sri Satya Sai Baba Temple.

Climate

Average rainfall in the district is 600 to 800 mm during the monsoon, moderate temperatures.  Summers (March to July) are dry and hot. The temperature ranges from 24 °C to 39.6 °C, (max. 41°C). The winter temperatures hover around 13.9 °C to 21.8 °C.

Railway Lines.  Latur is well connected by Central Railway broad gauge to Pune-Mumbai & Hyderabad.  Daily trains runs from Mumbai to Latur, thrice a week from Pune-Hyderabad and Nagpur-Kolhapur.

AIRPORT

Small airport developed by state government was running and commercial flights.  These were stopped due to non profit zone.  It is now available for VIP visits only.
